By the time we receive the transaction authorization request, it will have already been a few hundredths of a second since it left the Japanese payment terminal. We need to make a decision, and fast - otherwise you won't be able to pay and may have to do some washing up.
The question is: do we accept the transaction or not?
Throughout this process, we ask ourselves a series of questions:
- Do you carry enough of a balance to make this purchase?
- Have you exceeded your spending limit?
- We also perform a few anti-fraud checks, like checking if your card hasn’t been declared stolen.
We only respond to the authorization request after performing all of these checks. If everything comes back good, we block the amount on your account (this is when ‘In progress’ is displayed on the payment terminal).
Mastercard comes back to inform the payment terminal that the payment authorization request has been approved. A few seconds after having entered your PIN code, your payment is then (finally) accepted.
