What happens in the shadow.
Summary
Our Qonto Tech and Product teams are working hard to improve the your account experience every day. Yet most of their hard work however goes unnoticed because most of it happens behind the scenes on the app - in the core of the banking system. Today we decided to shed some light on their efforts that make all the difference in our product.
Behind the curtain
Behind the curtain
Jean-Benoît is a Back-End Developer at Qonto.
His role is to make sure your application runs smoothly. Every time you make an expense, he makes sure that the transaction is actually reflected on your bank account.
To this end, he works closely with Thaddée (among others). He's our Core Banking Expert in charge of our new banking platform (rightly called the Core Banking System).
This platform connects Qonto to various banking networks around the world. If you’re curious, you can check out this article (where you’ll find it explained without the complicated technical terms).
Both Jean-Benoît and Thaddée have focused on one key factor for the Core Banking System: speed.
Faster than ever
Imagine it’s lunchtime.
Around noon, tens of thousands of sandwiches and sushi trays are being purchased at once. That means tens of thousands of transactions need to be processed simultaneously.
The effect is the same on the Paris highway at rush hour: (payment) traffic jams. Just as they would slow down your car, these traffic jams increase the time it takes to process your transaction.
We built our CBS knowing that response time is key. - Pierre-Geoffroy Pasturel, Product Manager.
When you pay with your card, the card terminal sends a request for payment authorization to your bank. If the response time is too slow, it interprets this as a refusal (even if you have plenty of funds in your account).
Our solution: better managing the banking platform's resources.
In other words, whether we have 65,000 or 1 million companies, our platform will always have the resources to ensure that everyone can pay when they need to. So you can continue to eat as many BLTs as you want, when you want.
Making the impossible possible
Making the impossible possible
The major difference is the communication between what we call the Stack Ruby Back-End and the CBS. In other words, our application and the servers that power it interact better with our banking system.- Jean-Benoît Hamard, Back-End Developer
Although that may sound complicated, it simply means that thanks to our CBS we’re able to improve certain existing features. For example, now we give all your rejected direct debits a second chance.
This also opens up a whole range of possibilities: payment cards that can be adapted to individual needs, or even the possibility to manage several accounts from the same app.
Better and better
Better and better
Our new Core Banking System will only continue to improve. We hope you’ll like what’s coming up next.
To this end, all our users will gradually be given a brand new account on our new Core Banking System. This applies primarily to the users who have been with us from the start. Our Tech and Product teams have done everything in their power to make sure this change goes as smoothly as possible.
If you’re concerned by these technical changes, we’ll contact you. We look forward to seeing you in a few weeks on our new platform.
