An IBAN isn't a randomly generated number. It follows a standard structure and can be derived directly from your existing bank details.
You may need:
- Bank code: your bank's national identifier. You'll find it on your account statement or in your online banking portal under "Account details".
- Account number: your account number as defined by your bank, shown on your statements and in your online banking portal.
- Branch code: identifies the specific branch or banking office associated with the account, where applicable under the country's banking system.
The IBAN calculator automatically generates your IBAN from this information, in line with the international ISO 13616 standard, in three steps:
- Form the BBAN: The bank code, branch code, and account number are combined. The calculator formats the banking details according to the IBAN structure defined for the selected country.
- Calculate the check digit: A two-digit check key is calculated from the BBAN using the Modulo-97 method. It protects the IBAN against input errors.
- Assemble the IBAN: The country code, check digits, and BBAN form the complete IBAN structure defined for each country.
The calculated IBAN can be copied directly from the calculator for invoices, contracts, SEPA mandates, or to share with your employer. We recommend an additional check using our IBAN checker, especially if you entered the bank code or account number from memory.
Important note: A calculated IBAN is formally correct if the bank code and account number are accurate. However, this does not confirm that the account actually exists or is active. For official confirmation, contact your bank directly.
