Our free IBAN checker validates every IBAN in seconds according to the international ISO 13616 standard, with no sign-up and no data storage. Verification runs automatically in four steps:
1. Length check: the checker compares the number of characters in the IBAN entered against the standard format for that country. For example, a French IBAN must contain exactly 27 characters.
2. Format check: every IBAN follows a country-specific structure made up of a country code, a check digit, and a BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number). The checker analyzes whether the structure and character sequence match this pattern.
3. Check digit calculation: the two check digits at positions 3 and 4 are recalculated using the Modulo-97 method and compared against the IBAN entered. If they don't match, the IBAN is formally invalid.
4. Country recognition: using the two-letter country code, the tool automatically identifies the expected format and length, most common SEPA and non-SEPA countries are supported.
Important: Verification confirms only the formal validity of the IBAN based on mathematical and structural criteria. Whether the account is active, or the accuracy of the account holder's details cannot be verified. We recommend confirming the IBAN directly with the recipient before making a transfer.
