Faroe Islands IBAN structure

The Faroe Islands IBAN consists of 18 characters and includes three elements that uniquely identify your account.

  1. Country code: the first two letters identify the country where the account is held.

  2. Check digits: the two digits in positions 3 and 4 are calculated using the Modulo-97 method (ISO 13616) to automatically validate the IBAN.

  3. BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number): the remaining digits form the national account identifier. They contain the information needed to identify the bank and account within Faroe Islands banking system, in accordance with the national standard.

When do you need your IBAN from Faroe Islands?

Within the SEPA zone, IBAN has become the standard format for bank transfers and direct debits. It fully replaces the former RIB (bank code + branch code + account number + key) for transfers, direct debits, and receiving payments.

You'll need your IBAN in the following cases:

  1. SEPA transfers: for transfers within the SEPA zone, your IBAN is required, whether to pay an invoice, send money to individuals, or process business payments.
  2. Direct debit mandates: for recurring payments such as rent, utilities, phone bills, or insurance, a SEPA direct debit mandate requires your IBAN.
  3. Salary and income: to receive your salary or get paid by clients, include your IBAN on employment contracts, invoices, and order confirmations.
  4. Administrative and public payments: tax refunds, family allowances, pensions, grants, and social benefits are typically paid via IBAN.

Note: for in-store or online card payments, your IBAN is generally not required, a separate payment method based on your card details is used instead.
