Is e-invoicing mandatory?

Since November 27, 2020, companies providing services or supplies to the German government must submit invoices electronically. Different federal states may have varying implementation timelines and regulations.

From 2025, the e-invoice will also become mandatory in the B2B sector in Germany. This follows an EU directive aimed at standardizing and promoting electronic invoicing across the EU to improve efficiency in cross-border trade.

When will e-invoicing mandates roll out?

From January 2025

All B2B companies are required to be able to receive and process e-invoices for domestic taxable transactions through e-invoicing software.

From January 2027

All companies with an annual turnover of more than €800,000 must not only be able to receive and process e-invoices but also send them.

From January 2028

All companies must be able to receive, process, send, and archive documents via e-invoicing programs for services in the area of domestic B2B transactions.
